Merry Christmas! Here’s a free short story of submarine action in World War II. I originally wrote this to submit to thefirstline.com which runs a contest every quarter. They give you the first line for your story and you build the rest. If you are looking for a place to submit your shorts to, I would try there first.
I missed the deadline for this particular contest, but I eventually finished the story I titled “Down the Throat.” The USS Hammerhead runs into a Japanese destroyer. While the crew and the scenario are fictitious, there actually was a Hammerhead that made war patrols in the Pacific. She actually did sink the destroyer escort named in this story. I had a fictitious destroyer originally, but changed the name so the two combatants would be factual. Everything else is fiction.
I am working on another submarine story called Circular Run and hope to have it done soon. In the meantime enjoy the e-story. By the way, I will have this story in epub and mobi formats just before Christmas so check back if you need that format. Currently the PDF version is available here. Down the Throat Short Story
