Just about everyone else went across Rivers Ave to Ben Tillman Public School. I always dreamed of being able to ride a big yellow school bus like everyone else in the neighborhood. (That would have to wait until high school.)<\/p>\n<p>When Dad was not deployed, he would drive us to school and be there to pick us up in the afternoon. Mom never learned to drive and <i>never<\/i> rode in the front seat of our car. She did not want to know how fast Dad was going.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, there came the year my Dad was reassigned to Guam. He went unaccompanied.<\/p>\n<p>Well, how do we get to school now Mom? Why you will take a taxi cab son. Every morning like clockwork a black and white cab would pull up at our house and park on the street. Everyday after school let out there would be a black and white cab in the parking lot. I never saw Mom pay the driver and I don&#8217;t remember if it was always the same driver.<\/p>\n<p>You know what I <i>do<\/i> remember? How big the back seat of that cab was and how far it seemed to be from the front seat.
